This reaction has been found to proceed by two different mechanims .

The reaction between CH,Cl and hydroxide ion to yield methanol and chloride ion follows a second order kinetics, i.e., the rate depends upon the concentration of both the reactants.

It depicts a bimolecular nucleophille substitution (S,2) reaction.

The incoming ucleophile 1nteraets with alkyl halide causing carbon-halide bond to break and a new bond is formed between carbon and attacking nucieophile. Here, It is C- bond formed between C and -OH.
