explain reasons for the company's intentions towards reforms in land revenue system
Answers
The East India company introduced permanent settlement, ryotwari settlement and mahalwari settlement as land reforms in various states.
The main intention of the British was to exploit the farmers in these states.
They played the game of divide and rule by creating Zamindars or Jagirdars who were given special rights to collect tax on behalf of East India company.
The British wanted more revenue to compensate for their empty treasure which lost all its wealth in costly wars.
There were tax farmers who were landlords appointed by the British rulers known as Jagidars who had to pay a fixed commission to the East India company after the permanent land settlement.
This was because much of the revenue which was collected by the government came from the tax given by these lands.
