  • red blood cells help in transportation of oxygen from lungs to various body parts and carbon dioxide from body parts back to lungs.
  • RBCs have an enzyme called carbonic anhydrase which helps in carbonic acid from water and carbon dioxide which further dissociates into H+ and HCO3- ion.
  • it's membrane is called Donnan's membrane which is not permiable for Na+ & K+ ion but is permiable for HCO3- & Cl- ion.
  • a process called chloride shift occurs that is shifting of chloride ions from plasma to rbc ( occurs near tissues ). Opposite to this, a process reverse chloride shift occurs in lungs.
