when in an equation an element get oxidised and another get reduced . this process is called redox reaction

those reaction in which the oxidation and reduction takes place is called redox reaction
CuO+H2___ cu+h2O

in this cu is oxidizing agent and h2 is reducing agent and
H2S+Cl2______S+ 2HCl
in this h2s remove hydrogen so this is oxidation and cl2 gain hydrogen so this is reduction
