Answer:

Heya!

The light falling on a flat, smooth, reflecting surface, such as a mirror, undergoes regular reflection. Inregularreflection, aparallel beam incident ona smoothsurfacelike mirrorremainsparallel afterthe reflection. For example, in the case of the smooth lake, the crisp, clearimagesthat formare the result ofmanyparallel incident raysthat reflect as parallel reflected rays. (see image 1)

The light falling on a rough surface undergoes diffused reflection. When all the parallel rays reflected froma plane surfaceare not parallel, the reflection isknown asdiffused orirregular reflection. For example, in the case of the rough lake, the blurred images that form are the result of many parallel incident rays that are scattered after reflecting inmanydifferent directions. Thisbehaviour is called diffuse or irregular reflection. (see image 2)

The light rays strike the rough surface at many differentanglesofincidence. Thisisbecauseallthe normals.are'notparallelto each otheron therough surface. Thus, the light rays get reflectedat many differentangles.ThatIs why,the raysof reflected beambecomenon-parallel toeach other. Thus, laws of reflections are not Violated in diffused reflections.

★ Knowledge required :-

  • Reflection is the bouncing back of light rays on striking the surface.

  • Light is reflected from all surfaces.

  • Depending upon the surface of the reflecting object, the reflection of light is two types :-
  1. Regular reflection.
  2. Diffused reflection.

★ Regular and diffused reflection :-

Diffused Reflection or Irregular Reflection:- In this type of reflection, the light rays that fall on the surface are reflected in different directions irregularly.

This generally happens in the case of an irregular or roughly surfaced object.

Example: Sunlight does not reach directly into our room, but we can see things present in our room because of the irregular or diffused reflection of light.

Regular Reflection: In this type of reflection, the light rays that fall on the surface of the reflecting object reflect in a particular direction.

The reflected rays are always parallel to each other. This generally happens in the case of a smooth and shiny surface.

Example: Due to the regular reflection of light, we look at our image in the plane mirror.

★ Reflected Light Can be Reflected Again :-

Multiple reflections can be obtained by placing more than one mirrors at certain angles to each other This results in reflection of light for multiple times between the reflecting surfaces.

This phenomenon is used in certain scenarios such as:

  • In a Periscope to see hidden objects.

★ Multiple Images :-

  • Multiple images are formed when you place two mirrors inclined with an angle.

  • A infinite number of images are formed when two mirrors are placed parallel to each other.

To find number of images are formed :-

  • The number of images formed when mirrors are inclined with an angle 'θ' is given.

 \boxed { \sf { No.  \: of \:  images (n) =  \frac{360}{ \theta }- 1}}

★ More to know :-

What do we need to form a shadow?

A source of light, an opaque object and a screen are needed to form a shadow.

Observations:

  • An opaque object blocks the light falling on it.

  • This creates an area of darkness on the side of the object away from the source of light

  • A translucent object creates a faint area af darkness.

  • An area of darkness formed by an opaque abject obstructing light is called a shadow.

What is a plane mirror?

  • A plane mirror is a mirror that has a flat reflecting surface without any inward or outward curve.

  • Plane mirrors are made by depositing a silver layer on one side ol a glass place and then silver layer is protected by paint.

  • Silver metal is one of the best reflectors of light.

  • But, now-a-days instead of Silver, A thin layer of Aluminium is used to deposit on glass plates, because Aluminium is much cheaper than Silver and it also reflects light very well.
