Global Warming
Global warming is an increase in the Earth's overall temperature, and scientists attribute this increase to the greenhouse effect. Warming and cooling are regular cycles that occur on the planet; however, scientists are concerned that for approximately the last 150 years the climate has been changing at a much faster rate than normal, due to the accelerated generation of greenhouse gases beginning with the Industrial Revolution. Many scientists voice concern that a general upward trend of the Earth's temperatures will drastically change accessibility to food, water, raw materials and energy sources for animals and humans alik
The Greenhouse Effect
The greenhouse effect is the name scientists have given to the Earth's ability to retain heat. In fact, without this effect, life on Earth would not be possible because the planet would be too cold. When the sun's rays reach the planet, approximately two-thirds of the thermal energy enters Earth's atmosphere and is absorbed by the planet's surface. The Earth then emits this thermal energy, which is absorbed by the atmosphere. The atmosphere radiates the heat back towards the Earth, which absorbs the heat again. This process keeps the planet warm and can almost be thought of like a coat for the Earth.
