Explain relevance of human rights in globalized society.

Human rights are rights that belong to all people, regardless of age, gender, race, religion, or any other distinctions. The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights website defines these rights as:
Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible.
Universal human rights are often expressed and guaranteed by law, in the forms of treaties, customary international law , general principles and other sources of international law. International human rights law lays down obligations of Governments to act in certain ways or to refrain from certain acts, in order to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms of individuals or groups.
Human rights remain highly relevant in today's world -- especially as the articles set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are not generally followed. For example, despite The Universal Declaration of Human Rights protecting the right to liberty and the freedom against slavery, there are more slaves in the world today than in past history. According to the Global Slavery Index 2013 Findings,
The countries with the highest numbers of enslaved people are India, China, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Russia, Thailand, Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar and Bangladesh. Taken together, these countries account for 76% of the total estimate of 29.8 million in modern slavery.
Although human rights are better in some places than in others, human rights abuses are a universal problem. The rights of many people, such as women and the LGBTQ community, have little to no protection. Women are commonly being sold as sex slaves and forced into marriages, and consensual same-sex sexual relations around the world are punishable by imprisonment and execution.
For many, human rights are an empty promise, an ideal which must be fought for. The relevance of these rights will only increase until that fight is won.
