Well, I can't explain his theory, but there is two major reasons why.
Explanation:
The first is that variegation is used in regards to plants, usually the color patterns on leaves and stems. I.e. some plants of the same variety, have different variegation, or coloring patterns.
The second and more important reason is we don't know what his theory is. It would probably have to do with introducing variegation as a term for animals of the same species, with different coloring. Arthropods for instance, are animals like centipedes and caterpillars that are the same species, but end up with different coloring, or VARIEGATION.
