Answer:

rusting is a chemical change that takes place when iron metal comes in contact with air and water.During chemical change, a new substance 'ironoxide' is formed, which is commonly known as Rust.

Equation

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Corrosion of iron is generally termed as rusting of iron. It is a process in which iron is converted into the hydrated form of oxide in presence of air and moisture.

{\underline{\underline{\bf{Process:}}}}

We know that the atmospheric air contains oxygen and water vapour. So, when iron comes in contact with this atmospheric air, it slowly reacts with oxygen to form ferric oxide. This ferric oxide on further reaction with water vapour forms hydrated ferric oxide. This is called rust.

  2. \sf{{Fe}_{2}{O}_{3(s)}+{H}_{2}{O}_{(1)}\longrightarrow {Fe}_{2}{O}_{3}.x{H}_{2}{O}_{(s)}}

{\underline{\underline{\bf{Effects:}}}}

Rust formed is in the form of flakes which crumbles form the surface of the metal. In addition to corroding the metal, rusting also weakens the iron structures.

{\underline{\underline{\bf{Prevention:}}}}

The metal surface when coated with some other material prevents the exposure of the metal to the moist air.

  • Galvanization: In this process, iron is dipped in molten zinc.
  • Tinning: Forming a layer of tin over the iron surface is called tinning.
  • Electroplating: The process if coating the iron metal by another metal by means of electrolysis is called electroplating. The metals used for this purpose are nickel and chromium.
  • Alloying: The process of mixing of other metals with iron to make a homogeneous mixture is called alloying. The most commonly used alloy of iron is stainless steel.
