iron when exposed to air reacts with the moisture and oxygen present in the air. this forms a flaky red coating called rust on it. rust is actually ferric oxide monohydrate. (Fe2O3.H20)


4Fe + 3O2--->2 Fe2O3

4Fe + 3O2 + H2O----> 2 Fe2O3 .H20
