for this he used radium and using slits he made those into fine beams .which passed through toehold foil.
OBSERVATIONS :
he noticed that most of the rays passed without deflection which means majority of space was empty. few rays went through little deflection this indicates the passing of rays close to positive rays. very few deflected through large angles which indicated presence of positive sphere.

most of the fast moving particles passed straight through the gold foil . some of the particles were deflected by the foil by small angles . this is the experiment Rutherford discovered
