Rutherford studied the scattering of Alpha particles by thin metallic foil(gold, platinum etc) and a narrow pencil Beam of fast moving Alpha particles where struck on a thin metallic foil. the angular deflection of scattering of Alpha particles were studied with the help of moving microscope.

observations of Rutherford..

he observed the following activities in his experiment as follows...

1.most of the Alpha particles pass through the foil undeflected that is went to straight line through the foil.

2. some of them were deflected but only at a small angle.

3. a very few (1 in 2000) were deflected at large angle(~180)

Answer:

Rutherford's alpha particle scattering experiment changed the way we think of atoms. Rutherford directed beams of alpha particles (which are the nuclei of helium atoms and hence positively charged) at thin gold foil to test this model and noted how the alpha particles scattered from the foil.
