The formula for calculating electrons in s, p, d, f subshell is 2( 2l+1 ). According to this formula,

s-subshell (2-electrons)

p-subshell (6-electrons)

d-subshell (10-electrons)

f-subshell (14-electrons)

On the basis of the filling of electronic subshells, the elements may be classified into four sections or blocks i.e., s, p, d, & f-block elements in the periodic table depending upon the nature of the atomic orbitals into which the differentiating (last) electron enters.
