explain second wind and oxygen debt
Answers
Second Wind is a person's ability to recover and breathe freely during exercise, especially after have been tired and out of breath.
Oxygen debt means the shortage of oxygen faced by body tissues, as a result of strenuous activity. Athletes normally go through phases of Oxygen Debt, during training and competition.
❥Question ⤵
- ❥Explain second wind and oxygen debt.
❥Answer ⤵
❥Second wind :
❥The breathlessness caused due to prolonged exercise is removed automatically by our body within short span of time of such exercise. This sense of relief is called 'second wind'.
❥Causes of second wind:
When we perform strenuous exercise, our body takes some time to adjust according to the increased demand of energy. So, the second wind occurs before the adjustment.
❥Symptoms of second wind:
- Faster breathing
- Signs of tension and worry on the face
- Headache
- Suffocation in the chest appears
- Pain in muscles
- Condition of giddiness appears. These painful feelings disappear with the onset of second wind.
❥Oxygen debt :
❥Oxygen debt is a temporary oxygen shortage in the body tissues arising from exercise.
- During muscular exercise, blood vessels in muscles dilate and blood flow is increased in order to increase the available oxygen supply.
- Up to a point, the available oxygen is sufficient to meet the energy needs of the body.
- ❥However, when muscular exertion is very great, oxygen cannot be supplied to the muscle fibres fast enough.
- During such periods, additional ATP is generated by anaerobic glycolysis.
- ❥Here, the pyruvic acid is converted to lactic acid, which is transported to the liver to be converted into glucose or glycogen.
- ❥Once, adequate oxygen is available, lactic acid must be catabolized completely into carbon dioxide and water.
- ❥After exercise has stopped, extra oxygen is required to metabolize lactic acid, replenish ATP, phosphocreatine, and glycogen.
- ❥This additional oxygen that must be taken into the body after vigorous exercise to restore all systems to their normal states is oxygen debt.
