Mixtures can be classified into two types. They are homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. Homogeneous mixtures have a uniform composition, while heterogeneous mixtures do not have uniform composition.
SEPARATION OF HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURES;
Distillation - Distillation can be used to separate volatile and non-volatile substances.
Fractional distillation- Fractional distillation can be used to separate a mixture containing more than two liquids haing different boiling points.
Chromatography- Chromatography can be used to separate two or more dissolved solids.
SEPARATION OF HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURES;
Decantation- Decantation can be used to separate a liquid from solid which are present as large particles and does not dissolve in water.
Filtration-Filtration can be used to separate liquid from solid which are present as very small particles and does not dissolve in water.
Sublimation-Sublimation can be used to separate a volatile solid substance from non - volatile solid substance.
Separating funnel- Separating funnel can be used to separate two completely immiscible liquids.
