I- (central atom) will undergo an electronic arrangement to have 2 unpaired electrons (to form sigma bonds with 2 iodine atoms) and 3 lone pairs of electrons, resulting in a sp3d hybridisation. The 3 lone pairs prefer to occupy equatorial positions fwhile the bonded atoms get axial positions resulting in an overall linear shape.
