Sigma bonding is axial overlapping or head on overlapping, in this case overlapping is along the internuclear axes, whereas π bond is lateral overlapping so the extent of overlapping in case of internuclear axes(Sigma bond) is far more than that of lateral overlapping (π bond). And please note strength of bond is directly proportional to extent of overlappin and hence Sigma bond becomes stronger than π bond. Hope this helped you.
