A simple sentence consists of only one clause. A compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses. A complex sentence has at least one independent clause plus at least one dependent clause. A set of words with no independent clause may be an incomplete sentence, also called a sentence fragment.

Simple complex sentence : A sentence with one independent clause and one or more subordinate clauses are called simple complex sentence. The clauses are joined using subordinate conjunctions like as, although, because, when, whereas, unless etc. Or relative pronouns as who, which, whose, whom and that.



Compound sentence : sentence with two independent clauses joined by coordinating conjunctions are called compound sentence .



Example
Simple complex
They could not start the trek because it was raining heavily.
He adopted the puppy which was the runt of little
(Here because and which).


Compound sentence
Tom is an excellent student and is also a member of football team.
(Here and).
