Concrete sleepers are kept below the iron rail tracks so that the weight of the passing train is spread over a large area of ground and the track may not sink into the ground.

Heavy trains pass on the rails every time. Due to the pressure of these heavy trains , the rails may sink into ground. Wide wooden sleepers are placed below the rails so that the pressure that is applied by the trains can be distributed over a large area and hence the rails would not sink into ground.
