Social facilitation, or the audience effect, is the tendency for people to perform differently when in the presence of others than when alone. Compared to their performance when alone, when in the presence of others, they tend to perform better on simple or well-rehearsed tasks and worse on complex or new ones.

Answer:

Social facilitation refers to the concept that performance on a specific task is influenced by the presence of others.

Explanation:

The better performance in the presence of others is because the person experiences arousal, which makes them react in a more intense manner.

The arousal is because the person feels he or she is being evaluated. Cottrell called this idea evaluation apprehension. The person will be praised if performance is good (reward); is criticized if performance is bad (punishment). We wish to get praise and avoid criticism, therefore we try to perform well and avoid criticism.

A few examples of social facilitation are:

- A musician who becomes energized by seeing an audience and does a better performance

- Finding that you do better work if you go to a library than if you stay at home to study.
