In a solid, the particles (ions, atoms or molecules) are closely packed together. The forces between particles are strong so that the particles cannot move freely but can only vibrate. As a result, a solid has a stable, definite shape, and a definite volume.

Answer:
In solids particles are tighty packed due to which intermolecular space is very less and therefore intermolecular spaces are stronger. That is why solids have fixed shape, fixed volume and can't be compressed.
Properties of Solids are following:
1. Solids have definite shape and volume and mass.
2. Space between particles is minimum.
3. Forces of attraction between particles is maximum.
4. Movement of particles is minimum.
5. They are least compressible.
6. Their rate of diffusion is least.
Hope it might help you!
