SONAR is an acronym that stands for Sound Navigation And Ranging  .This instrument make use of  sound waves  for  detecting  and locating the objects  underwater likes rocks, submarines ,icebergs  and to find the depth of water bodies .

SONAR Principle

This instrument is based on a very simple principle i.e a pulse of ultrasonic waves is sent into the water there it strikes the target  and get bounced back towards the source .(We can’t hear these  ultrasonic waves as their pitch is too high for humans to detect).

Applications

1.For Search and rescue  missions2. For Pipeline inspection 3. For Various Surveys in shallow waters  etc.
