Answer :

Stress-strain curve :

  • The stress-strain curve varies for different materials.
  • To obtain the stress strain curve of a material, tensile stress is applied on the material and the stress and strain are recorded.
  • It is found out that for a certain region of the curve in the graph, if the curve is linear, then the material follows Hooke's law.
  • Then, in the curve further, even if the stress is removed and the the body comes back to the original dimension, it will not follow Hooke's law.
  • Further, the body does not come back to original dimension and the point at which this starts is called the yield point.
  • The yield point is also termed as the elastic limit of the body.
  • The corresponding stress at the yield point is called the yield strength of the material.
  • After this point, even if the stress is zero the strain will not be zero.
  • Then, the material will be set as permanent set.
  • The defamation occurred is called the plastic deformation.
  • The corresponding stress here is said to be the tensile strength of the material.
  • Beyond this, if the additional strain is produced, the body gets fractured.
  • If the point of tensile strength and the point of fracture is closer, then the body said to be brittle.
  • If the point of tensile strength and the point of fracture is far, then the body is said to be ductile.
  • The bodies which can be stretched to cause large strains are called elastomers. The examples of such body include rubber band and aorta tissue.
