• the point A represents the proportionality limit. O to A the material follows hooke's law as the stress remains directly proportional to strain.

• After point A hooke's law is not followed.

• Point B represents the elastic limit.
The body regains It's original shape and size on removal of deforming force.
The B point is called the yield point.

• After Point B the material starts to deform permanently and shows permanent strain even after removal of deforming or distorting force.

• D point is the maximum/ultimate stress that can be applied to that body after which even a slight trace of stress can cause high magnitude of strain.

• Finally the breaking point or fracture point comes where the material breaks down.
If DE is short it is considered brittle.
