In diamond the carbon atoms are strongly bound to each other each. carbon atom is bound to four other carbon atoms to form a three-dimensional rigid structure the. strong covalent bonding in diamond is the cause of its hardness resistance.

in diamond, every carbon is bonded to four neighbouring atoms by covalent bonds. Therefore, diamond has a tetragonal three dimensional structure which makes it very hard.
