The information from environment is detected by the nerve cells called neurons , the structural and functional unit of the nervous system
It is the longest cell of the human body with length of 90 to 100 cm . It is made up of network of nerve cells which are specialised for conducting information through electrical impulses from one part of the body to another .
Neuron is composed of following main parts :
CELL BODY OR CYTON : The broad rounded part of neuron with a central nucleus , abundant cytoplasm and various cell organelles except centrioles .
DENDRITES : The photoplasmic , branched processes of the cell body , which recieve and transmit stimulus .
AXON : The long fibre like cytoplasmic process that conducts impulses away from the cell body . It is considered as the longest part of neuron . The AXON maybe covered by a protective sheath
called MYELIN SHEATH.
NERVE ENDING : The fine branch like terminations of neurons . sensory endings are actually dendrites lying far from the neuronal cell body .
