The discovery of transposable elements in maize by Barbara McClintock was greatly facilitated by the thorough genetic characterization of this species since the early years of this century. In particular, the identification of several colour genes was helpful to detect unstable mutants. Meanwhile, at least ten independent mobile element systems are known in corn (Petersen 1986). However, only four of these families are molecularly characterized in more detail (recent reviews: Döring and Starlinger, 1986; Fedoroff, 1989).
