Some British states were brought under the British control without actually annexing them. This was done by following the subsidiary alliance introduced by lord Wellesley.

Explanation: Subsidiary Alliance as the term suggest was a method of annexation introduced by the British in India
- Here, the kings and Nawabs had to pay a subsidiary amount(very high rate)to the British
- The British in turn would protect this Nawab from attacks from their enemies. The amount was taken in order to maintain such a large standing army
- This alliance did not allow the Nawabs and kings to have their own independent army.
- If they failed the pay the amount, then a part of their kingdom would be annexed.
The first few rulers who entered this alliance was
- Nawab of Hyderabad
- Tipu Sultan
- The Nawab of Awadh
