ANCHORAGE-DEPENDENT CELLS

Anchorage-dependent cells are of great interest for various biotechnological applications.

) They represent a formidable production means of viruses for vaccination purposes at very large scales (in 1000–6000 l reactors) using microcarriers, and in the last decade many more novel viral vaccines have been developed using this production technology.

(ii) With the advent of stem cells and their use/potential use in clinics for cell therapy and regenerative medicine purposes, the development of novel culture devices and technologies for adherent cells has accelerated greatly with a view to the large-scale expansion of these cells.

SUSPENSION

Suspension culture is a type of culture in which single cells or small aggregates of cells multiply while suspended in agitated liquid medium. It is also referred to as cell culture or cell suspension culture.

It is also important to build up an understanding of an organ formation or embryoid formation starting from single cell or small cell aggregates.

Suspension culture derived from medicinally important plants can be studied for the production of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids and a considerable amount of industrial effort is being placed on the exploitation and expansion of this area.
