In physics, A system which defines the fundamental units, in comparison with which a fundamental quantity can be expressed is referred to as system of units. Different systems have been developed over a period of time.

The following systems of units are in common use:

  1. F.P.S. system: In this system, the unit of mass, length and time are in pound, foot and second, respectively.
  2. C.G.S. system: In this system, the unit of mass, length and time are in gram, centimetre and second, respectively.
  3. M.K.S. system: In this system, the unit of mass, length and time are in kilogram, meter and second, respectively.
  4. S.I. (Systeme International d’unites): This system is an extended version of M.K.S system. This system has seven fundamental and two supplementary quantities. In this system the units of metre, kilogram and second have been redefined for more accuracy, As of today S.I. system is accepted and is used all over the world for scientific work.

System of Units:

  • A system of Units is a set of units for given measurements or quantities used as fundamental units.
  • There are many systems of units that we use to measure quantities like kgs for mass, meters for length, cm² for the area, etc. By using fundamental units we can also derive other units like meters per sec.

Generally, we use the following system of units to measure things

C.g.s. system of units:

The unit of length - centimeters (cm)

The unit of mass - gram (g)

The unit of time - second (s)

M.k.s. system of units:

The unit of length is the meter (m)

The unit of mass is the kilogram (kg)

The unit of time is second (s).

S.I. Units

The S.I units of Length - Metre (m)

The S.I units of Mass - Kilogram (kg)

The S.I units of Time - Second (s)

The S.I units of Temperature - Kelvin (K)

The S.I units of Electric Current - ampere

The S.I units of Luminous intensity - candela
