What are taxanomic categories?

⟹ The various grouping levels or ranks in classification are known as taxonomic categories. The highest category is kingdom. Other major categories, in descending order are phylum, class, order, family, genus and species.

THE TAXANOMIC CATEGORIES:-

Species:- Species occupies a key position in classification. It is the lowest taxanomic category. A species may have subgroups, called subspecies or varieties showing certain distinct features of their own.

Genus:- A genus group of special similar in the board features after organization but different in detail. all the species in one genus have a common ancestry. genus may have a single living species and its species as homo.

Family:- A family is a group of related genera. The genus Felis of cats and the genus panthera of lion, tiger and leopard are placed in the family Felidae. All these animals have retractile claws.

Order:- An order is a group of related families. The family felidae of cats and the family canidae of dogs are assigned to the order carnivora. Cats and dogs have large canine teeth and are flesh-eaters.

Class:- A class is a group of related orders. The order rodentia of rats, lagomorpha of rabbits and carnivora of cats and dogs, all having hair and milk glands, are placed in the mammalia.

Phylum:- A Phylum is a group of related animal classes. A group of related plant classes is called a division.

Kingdom:- Kingdom is the highest category in biological classification. It is a group of phyla/division which have certain common characteristics. All phyla of the animals lack cell wall and chlorophyll, and are placed in the kingdom Animalia, all divisions of the plants have rigid wall around their cells, and are included in the kingdom Plantae.
