The time of accomplishing any action of a verb is called Tense. It denotes the time an action takes place, whether sometime in the past, in the present or will take some time in the future.

Types of Tense :-

There are 3 types of tense.

• Present Tense
• Past Tense
• Future Tense

Present Tense:-

The Tense which describes an action in the present time is called Present Tense.

Present Tense is divided in 4 types:-

• Present Indefinite Tense.
• Present Continuous Tense
• Present Perfect Tense
• Present Perfect Continuous Tense.

Present Indefinite Tense:- The Simple Present or Present Indefinite Tense describes an action in the present time. It also describe habitual actions and universal truths.

Structure:- Subject + present form of the main verb + object + extension

Examples:-

• Rohim does his duties regularly.
• Shakespeare says, "Life is tale told by an idiot."
• She says that she can do the work.

Present Continuous Tense:-

The present continuous tense describes an action which is going on at present.

Structure:- Subject + am/is/are + ing with the main verb + object + extension

• I am doing my homework.
• She is going to her office
• Is she preparing dinner?

Present Perfect Tense:-

The present perfect tense describes an action which has just finished but the result of which still continues.

Structure:- Subject + have/has + Past perfect form of main verb + object + extension

• I have done the work
• They have lived in Japan for 10 years.
• I have already written the letter.

Present Perfect Continuous Tense:-

This Tense expresses that the action has been going on for some time and it is not finished yet.

Structure:- Subject + have been/has been + ing with the main verb + object + extension

• I have been working for two hours.
• They have been playing for an hour.
• She has been living in London for 5 years.

Past Tense:-

The Tense which describes an action in the past time is called Past Tense.

Past Tense is divided in 4 types:-

• Past Perfect Continuous Tense.

Past Indefinite Tense:- The Simple Past or Past Indefinite Tense describes an action that took place in the past and the result of which is no longer present.

Past Continuous Tense:-

Past Perfect Tense:-

The past perfect tense describes an action which complete before another past action.

Past Perfect Continuous Tense:-

This Tense expresses that the action that began in the definite moment in the past and continued up to that moment and was still progress at that moment.

• I had been reading for two hours.
• He had been trying to get her on the phone.
• She had been living in London for 5 years.

Future Tense:-

The Tense which describes an action in the future time is called Future Tense.

Future Tense is also divided in 4 types:-

• Future Indefinite Tense.

• Future Perfect Tense
• Future Perfect Continuous Tense.

Future Indefinite Tense:- The Simple Future or Future Indefinite Tense describes an action will happen in the future.

This tense is used for actions which will be in progress over a period of time that will end in the future.
