  • Sound is a vibration that travels through a transmission medium like a gas, liquid, or solid as an acoustic wave.
  • Sound is the receipt of these waves and the brain's perception of them in human physiology and psychology.
  • Acoustic waves with frequencies in the audio frequency range (about 20 Hz to 20 kHz) evoke an auditory perception in humans.
  • These sound waves have wavelengths ranging from 17 meters (56 feet) to 1.7 millimeters in air at atmospheric pressure (0.67 in).
  • Ultrasound is defined as sound waves with a frequency greater than 20 kHz that humans cannot hear.
  • Infrasound is defined as sound waves below 20 Hz. The hearing ranges of many animal species differ.
