Tetravalency is the property of carbon which enables carbon to make four single bonds with same or different elements of valence one.

Carbon has four valence electrons.Since it can neither lose nor gain electrons to attain octet,it forms covalent bonds by sharing its four electrons with other atoms .This characteristic of the carbon atom by virtue of which it forms covalent bonds is called the tetravalency of carbon
