The atomic number of carbon is 6. The electronic configuration is 1s², 2s² ,2p². Carbon has two unpaired electrons in the second .Therefore, it should be divalent .Carbon exhibits tetravalency .

This is explained as follows :

During the chemical reaction. The carbon atom gets excited .On excitation one electron from the 2s level is promoted to 2p levEl .The electronic configuration of carbon in the excited state become 1s¹ , 2s¹ , 2px¹,2py¹, 2pz¹ .

Thus the carbon atom has four unpaired electrons. This is why carbon atom exhibits tetravalency.
