1) Lepotene or Leptonema; where the chromatin fibres of interphase nucleus shorten and elongated chromosomes become clear.
2) Zygotene or Zygonema; where pairing is such that the genes of the same character present on the two chromosomes come to lie exactly opposite. The process of attachment of the homologous chromosomes is known as synapsis.
3) Pachytene or Pachynema; where chromosomes are paired and occur in synaptonemal complexes. The paired chromosomes or bivalents shorten. Each bivalents or chromosomes is made up of actually four chromatic, two of each chromosome. The two chromatids belonging to the same chromosomes are called sister chromatids and those who are not are similarly known as nonsister chromatids.
4) Diplotene or Diplonema;The nucleoprotein fusion complex of the synapsed chromosomes dissolves partially. Here chiasmata is also formed by the pints of attachment between the homologous chromosomes.
5) Diakinesis; Chiasmata shift towards so the nucleus. It consists of fine fibres called as terminalisation.

b) Metaphase 2
