The collapse of the Mughal authority and inroads of Ahmad Shah Abdali had created political convulsion in Punjab. Ahmad Shah Abdali only collected revenue but did not exercise any political control over the area so the province became a no-mans land.
These political conditions were conducive to rise to the power of Sikh misls under Sikh Chieftains which had extensive territories in Punjab. At the time of Ranjit Singh’s birth on 13 November, 1780, the greater part of Punjab plains was divided among twelve Sikh misls or associations of warriors.
Ranjit Singh‘s father was leader of one of these misls but died in 1790, his ambitious and enterprising son inspired by the ambition of bringing all the Sikh units under his personal sway. Ranjit Singh achieved great success but was confronted with the power of the British who had extended their power to the Jammu after the second Maratha war in 1803-04.
