explain the achievements (merits) of mendeleev's periodic table
Answers
Answer:
Achievements of the Mendeleev's periodic tables are as under:-
- 1) Systematic study of elements:-
As the elements having same properties are grouped together so it becomes very useful to remember the properties of large number of elements in a systematic way.
- 2) Prediction of new elements:-
Mendeleev predicted the properties of those missing elements from the known properties of the other elements in the same group. On the basis of this, he named Gallium as Eka-Aluminum, Germanium as Eka-Silicon and Scandium as Eka-Boron.
- 3) Correction of atomic mass:-
Atomic mass of beryllium was corrected from 13.5 to 9. Atomic mass of indium, gold and platinum were also corrected.
Explanation:
Achievements of mendeleev's periodic table
1. Systematic study of the elements
-Mendeleev for the first time arranged a very large number of elements into groups and periods . This made the study of elements quite systematic.
2. Prediction of new elements and their properties-
Mendeleev laid more stress on similarity in properties rather on increasing atomic masses of elements . So whenever a particular element did not fit in the arrangement , he left a gap in the periodic table . Thus , many gaps for the undiscovered elements were left in the periodic table by Mendeleev.
3. Correction of doubtful atomic masses -
Mendeleev also corrected the atomic masses of certain elements with the help of their expected positions and properties.
