The Sinhala Only Act, formally the Official Language Act No. 33 of1956, was an act passed in the Parliament of Ceylon in 1956. ... Sinhalese is the language of Sri Lanka's majority Sinhalese people, who accounted for around 70% of the country's population at that time.

The Act of 1956 in Sri Lanka is known as Sinhala Only Bill. It was formally being called as the Official Language Act No. 33 of 1956.  The act established Sinhalese as official language of Sri Lanka and thus replaced the English. It established the supremacy of Sinhalese in Sri Lanka and failed to give official recognition to Tamil. The act later became one of the causes of enmity between the Sinhalese and Tamils.
