The annual cycle of seasonal movement of dhangar:

  • Dhangars are an essential pastoral group in the state of Maharashtra.
  • It was not the cold and snow that characterised the seasonal migration, unlike with the mountain pastoralists: instead, the monsoon altered and the dry season.
  • On the central plain of Maharashtra, the shepherds of Dhangar lived during the monsoon.
  • This place had low precipitation and poor soil.
  • It was a semiarid environment. There could be sown only dry crops such as bajra.
  • This has been the annual cycle of cyclical action of the Dhangars.
  • In October, they harvested bajra  and they reach Konkan after March.
  • When the monsoon starts, coastal areas with their flocks and returns to their settlement.
