Explain the anomalous behaviour of oxygen in elements of group 16 with reference to : 1) atomicity 2) oxidation and write magnetic properties of a) N2O4 b) NO2

  • Oxygen is diatomic gas  While others are complex solid.  
  • Oxygen molecule is paramagnetic in nature  and has two unpaired electron.  
  • All other are  Diamagnetic.

N2O4 is diamagnetic in nature with even paired of electrons. Same properties work for nitrogen dioxide, NO2 means diamagnetic in nature where there are two terminal oxygens, in this each electron is contribute to two σ bonds.

Answer:Anamolus behaviour of oxygen is due to this properties

1)it is diatomic gas while other are complex solid.(atomicity)

2) due to electronegativity of oxygen is very high it shows only negative oxidation State -2
