The Indian Merchants and industrialist supported the Civil Disobedience Movement for the first time. Industrialist like GD Birla, PurushottamDas Thakur etc. enthusiastically supported the movement by the following ways:
- They began to oppose British laws and opinions that restricted their hold on Indian market.
- They were powerful in society and wanted and expand their business, so they began opposing the colonial government that restricted their movement.
- They wanted protection against import and a rupee sterling foreign exchange ratio they would discourage imports.
- They criticised the Colonial control over Indian economy
- Many industrialists believe Swaraj as the time when colonial control over Indian market didn't exist. As a result business would flourish without constraints.
