when the instrument's gears and the instrument itself undergoes wear and tear which results in a slight error in the measurement. the backlash mainly occurs in the ( SCREW GAUZE) where if the screw gauge on turning repeatedly after the zero mark creates a click sound and this after years of use result in the wear and tear of the gears (WHICH CAUSES backlash error)
