Transmission of high-energy or sub-atomic particles and electromagnetic waves, through space or through a medium is radiation. Ultraviolet rays, X-Rays, microwaves etc. are examples of radiation.

The two main types of radiation are ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. Exposure to radioactive elements, direct cosmic rays, inhalation of radioactive gases etc. come under ionizing radiation and cause tissue damage and affect our health. Light, radio waves, radar etc. are non-ionizing radiations and do not cause damage to our health.

Shielding from harmful radioactive rays and gases, reducing the length of exposure to such elements and keeping a distance from such radioactive elements, are ways in which we can protect ourselves.
