first we take in air through the nostrils where the air is filtered by the mucus and small hairs present on the inner wall of the nostrils. This air is passed through the throat where rings of cartilage ensure that the air passage does not collapse. The air is then taken to the lungs where the passage divides to form bronchi which further divides to form bronchioles. These bronchioles terminate in balloon like structures called alveoli which increases the surface area for exchange of gases

The breathing in human beings takes place through the organs called lungs. The taking in of air rich in oxygen into the body during breathing is called 'inhalation' and giving out (or expelling) the air rich in carbon dioxide is called 'exhalation'. Both, inhalation and exhalation take place regularly during breathing.
