The northern plain is broadly divided into 3 sections based on the rivers,which drain these regions.
*The Western part of the northern plain formed by the river Indus and its tributaries is referred to as the Punjab plains
*The part of the northern plain lying between the rivers Ghaggar and Tista is known as the Ganga plains
*The part of the Northern Plain lying in Assam is known as Brahmaputra plains.
