The northern plain is broadly divided into 3 sections based on the rivers, which drain these regions.

*The Western part of the northern plain formed by the river Indus and its tributaries is referred to as the Punjab plains

*The part of the northern plain lying between the rivers Ghaggar and Tista is known as the Ganga plains

*The part of the Northern Plain lying in Assam is known as Brahmaputra plains.
