Answer:

(a) Carbon forms large number of compounds due to its tetravalency and property of catenation.

1)Tetra means four. The element with valency four is called tetravalent. Carbon has 4 electrons in its outermost shell. It could gain four electrons forming C4– anion. But, it would be difficult for the nucleus with six protons to hold on to ten electrons, that is, four extra electrons.

It could lose four electrons forming C4+ cation. But, it would require a large amount of energy to remove four electrons leaving behind a carbon cation with six protons in its nucleus holding on to just two electrons.

Thus, carbon can neither lose  nor gain 4 electrons but it can share its valence electrons with other atoms of carbon or with atoms of other elements. Therefore, carbon can form only covalent compounds.

Carbon element is found in large form of compounds on the earth because it has the ability to form long chains by forming covalent bonds.

2) Catenation: Catenation is the property of self combination of carbon atoms to form long chains.
