The Indian Rebellion of 1857 had diverse political, economic, military, religions and social
causes.... The Spark that led to a mutiny in several sepoy companies was the issue of new
gunpowder cartridges for the Enfield rifle in February, 1857.
A rumour was spread that the cartridges were made from cow and a pig fat.

there were 5 types of causes--
1..military
2..economical
3..social
4..political
5..immediate

MILITARY CAUSE--
Indian sepoys were ill treated by british officers.Indian sepoys were not happy with their salary. All the ways of thier promotion was stopped. They were forced to cross the sea which was against thier religious sentiments.

ECONOMICAL CAUSE--
The britishers stopped the pension of certain rulers like Nana Saheb. The britishets bought materials from India at a low cost and sold them in England at a high cost.

SOCIAL CAUSE--
The britishers interefared in social customs. They banned Sati system. They encouraged widow marriage and child education in english.

POLITICAL CAUSE--
The british rulers annexed many Indian states on the charge of thier policies like Subsidairy alliance,Doctrine of Lapse,Misgovernance etc.

IMMEDIATE CAUSE--
A young soldier Mangal Pandey was hanged to death.85 Indian sepoys were dismissed.Imdian sepoys were forced to use the cartridges made up of cow and pig fat.

THESE ALL REASONS LED TO REVOLT OF 1857.
