The unemployment rate is a measure of the prevalence of unemployment and it is calculated as a percentage by dividing the number of unemployed individuals by all individuals currently in the labor force. During periods of recession, an economy usually experiences a relatively high unemployment rate. According to International Labour Organization report, more than 200 million people globally or 6% of the world's workforce were without a job in 2012.

There are many causes of unemployment:-
In caseof india we have unemployment in rural and urban areas. In case of rural areas when people find a plot to work, whole family members are engaged in that plot but the work requires the service of less peoples due to which the unemployment occurs because the persons who are extra can also work in another plot.
In case of urban areas ,many youth with matriculation ,graduation and post graduadion degrees are not able to find jobs and this happens because of the lack of job opportunities. There is unemployment among technically qualified person on one hand ,while there is dearth of technical skills required for economic growth.
