The French entered the country posing as traders, bringing modern education for the people of Vietnam.

In truth they wanted to exploit the rich environmental resources of Vietnam with forced labor from the Vietnamese locals.

They had to remove or counter the chinese influence the Vietnamese elites had on the society, for this they systematically removed chinese influence and established schools providing western education in Vietnam (Tonkin Free school).

The French embarked on a civilisation mission of the colonies to provide natural resource for themselves.

Nationalism against the French could be seen in various parts of Vietnamese life, starting in schools with teachers and students. (write example of tonkin free school issue with the colon principal), They rebelled against the french by quietly modifying the school text books and provided their own views. During the great rat hunt, they did not capture the rats for saving the life of the French, rather to get paid.

The Vietnamese suffered huge taxation under the French rule, all raw materials were transported or exported to France under low cost, rendering two sections of the society. French exploited religious sentiments. The Vietnamese in school textbooks were shown as people of low class who could only participate in labor and not rule themselves, the French was shown as the people who could rule everything, modern and cool!!

The following were the causes of the US involvement in the war in Vietnam:

(i) The US policy planners got afraid of the victory of the Ho Chi Minh government. They formed an opinion that this government would start a domino effect, i.e. Communist governments would be established in other countries in the area. The US could not tolerate the spread of Communism and decided to intervene decisively

(ii)France had to face great humiliation in Vietnam. America, therefore, wanted to crush this country forever in order to save the prestige of the capitalist countries like France.

(iii)America did not want the unification of Vietnam and South Vietnam gladdened America. But when the heads of the two parts (North Vietnam and South Vietnam) tried to unify them the US could not tolerate It sent troops and arms in Vietnam to crush its power.

But US entry into the war proved costly to the Vietnamese as well as the

Americans.
